The Crucible

Written by Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller was an American playwright, essayist, and screenwriter in the 20th-century American theater. Among his most popular plays are All My Sons (1947), Death of a Salesman (1949), The Crucible (1953), and A View from the Bridge (1955). He wrote several screenplays, including The Misfits (1961). The drama Death of a Salesman is considered one of the best American plays of the 20th century.

The Crucible is set in a fictional town during the Salem witch trials of 1692. It dramatizes the events of the trials as a way to explore themes of mass hysteria, reputation, and individual integrity in the face of societal pressure. The play centers around John Proctor, his wife Elizabeth, and Abigail Williams, who accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft. Ultimately, the play examines the dangers of unchecked accusations, religious extremism, and the consequences of prioritizing reputation over truth.
